The Impact of Culture and Leadership on Safety Performance
At the 2011 National Safety Psychology Conference, Dr Peter Langford presented on the work practices and leadership/culture factors that predict safety performance. Based on research into organisational culture and leadership conducted by Voice Project, Pete suggested that:
-
Safety may be at risk when leaders set high expectations for
productivity and organisational performance
-
The single best cultural predictor of high safety performance is a
strong belief and support for social and environmental ethics
-
Sound processes, a commitment to learning and development of staff, and
effective problem solving skills were good predictors of safety
- Performance correction is one of the biggest gaps in leadership behaviours
